Hot Curl's Prescott Horn on why he lives in Great Neck, when there will be a L.I. gig for Hot Curl, and his favorite pizza spot
Although billed as a Brooklyn-based indie/surf/psychedelic band, Hot Curl has Long Island roots. Frontman/guitarist Prescott Horn is a native of Great Neck, making the effort to commute into Brooklyn for practices and gigs. The up-and-coming group's next New York area gig is set for October 18th at Baby's All Right in Brooklyn, as the quartet -- which also includes drummer Justin Lisa, lead guitarist Alejandro Triana and bassist Sharif Mekawy -- plays alongside Fruit & Flowers, Grim Streaker and Darkwing.
On behalf of No Place Like Long Island, I had the pleasure of conducting Q&A over e-mail with Mr. Horn. More on Hot Curl, whose latest release is the Late Bloom EP, can be found on the band's Bandcamp, Soundcloud and Facebook pages.
How would you describe Hot Curl to someone who's never heard the band before?
Prescott Horn: I would say that Hot Curl is a blend of psychedelic garage rock and surfy dream pop, if that makes any sense.
Has Hot Curl ever played live on Long Island?
Prescott Horn: Hot Curl has yet to play a show on Long Island. So far we have only played in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Cambridge, Providence, and Hamden, Connecticut.
Any idea when a Long Island gig may happen?
Prescott Horn: I think a nice North/South Fork tour next summer might be fun. I'll bring it up at rehearsal.
What about the first proper concert on the Island you ever attended?
Prescott Horn: I haven’t been to many concerts on Long Island, but I did see a show that included Yeasayer, Weezer and The Flaming Lips at Jones Beach Theater. It was an amazing show and my friend and I were practically front row. I caught a pick [Weezer frontman] Rivers Cuomo threw out into the crowd that night and I still have it to this day.
Is there anything you miss about living on Long Island?
Prescott Horn: Well, lucky for me, I actually still live on Long Island and commute to Brooklyn for band practice and shows. It’s nice being out on the Island because there is more green and I can drive anywhere I want.
What's coming up for Hot Curl?
Prescott Horn: We have a show coming up on October 18th at Baby’s All Right in Williamsburg with Fruit & Flowers, Darkwing and Grim Streaker. We are really looking forward to this one and it should be a blast!
When not busy with music, how do you like to spend your free time?
Prescott Horn: Some ways I like to spend my time, when not making music, are going to shows, surfing, creating graphics and reading. Mostly books about music.
Do you have a favorite restaurant on Long Island?
Prescott Horn: I would have to say that my favorite place to eat on Long Island is my hometown pizza spot, Gino’s in Great Neck.
Finally, Prescott, any last words for the kids?
Prescott Horn: Don’t wait to start a band, go out and find kids who like making music the way that you do and make it happen. Oh and don’t do things you don’t want to do just to fit in.
